Case:           20-2390287

Date:            August 26, 2020

Time:           6:44 a.m.

Location:     7600 block of FM 620

Deceased:   Jacob Byrd, White male, 7/31/1994

On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at approximately 6:44 a.m., Austin police responded to multiple calls about a five-car incident in the 7600 block of FM 620. The preliminary investigation indicates that Jacob Byrd was attempting to make a left turn out of Tin Tara apartments located at 7655 FM 620 when he collided with a white, 2014 Jeep Cherokee that was northbound. Jacob Byrd was ejected from the blue, 2008 Honda Accord he was driving at which time three other eastbound vehicles became involved.

The driver of a white or silver SUV slammed on her brakes, presumably to avoid striking Mr. Byrd, when she was hit by a black, 2020 Acura Integra. The Integra was then rear ended by a silver, 2010 Toyota Tacoma.

The driver of the SUV, described as a White female, estimated to be in her mid-40s with short blonde or grey hair and a thin build, got out of the vehicle to check on the driver of the Integra before fleeing the scene. The SUV, pictured below, has damage to the backside.

Jacob Byrd was pronounced deceased on scene at 7:10 a.m.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case should call APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-6873. You can also submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

This is Austin’s 55th fatal traffic crash of 2020, resulting in 60 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, there were 54 traffic fatalities.

These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash and investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.
