City of Austin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release Date: Sep. 30, 2020
Contact: Public Information Office     512-974-5017    Email

Case:          20-2731310

Date:          Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Time:          8:41 p.m.

Location:    12300 block of Yarmont Way

Deceased:   Luke Kemper, White male, 1/24/2004

On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at approximately 8:41 p.m., Austin 911 received a call of a man with a gunshot wound in the Walgreens parking lot at 12601 Tech Ridge Blvd. Upon arrival, officers located 16-year-old Luke Kemper. Austin-Travis County EMS transported Mr. Kemper to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas where he was pronounced deceased at 9:14 p.m.

The individuals who were with Luke Kemper at the time of the shooting provided false information to officers about the circumstances leading up to the homicide. This caused a delay in evidence collection including determining who else may have been involved. A separate group, friends of Mr. Kemper, provided details and information about what occurred. Investigators are working to locate the others who were there at the time of the incident to understand what caused the altercation.

Based on information developed thus far, it appears this homicide may be related to the purchase of a small amount of marijuana. There is no indication that there is an ongoing threat to the public.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

A $1000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call APD Homicide at 512-974-TIPS (8477), email them at homicide.apd@austintexas.gov, use the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 512-472-TIPS (8477) or use the Crime Stoppers App. You can also submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, free on iPhone and Android.
