Four finalists and a winner were recognized on Oct. 26., 2017.
The City of Austin’s Small Business Program, a division of the Economic Development Department, along with the Austin Young Chamber (AYC) hosted its first annual Austin Fast Start Pitch competition on October 26th for local small businesses. The competition focuses on priorities to grow or expand local small businesses. Applications were accepted for consumer-based packaged goods and four finalists were selected to present before an audience. The four finalists were Rogue Pet Feed, Curcuma Food Trailer, O’JOY, and Elite Sweets. Rachel Musquiz, owner of Curcuma, was the winner of $2,000 cash prize and $5,000 in in-kind services for her product Golden Mylk.
“Going through Austin Fast Start has been an incredible experience,” said Rachel Musquiz owner of Curcuma. “Preparing for the pitch helped me perfect the way I talk about my business, especially when it comes to sharing my story and vision for growth.”
Musquiz added, “The questions from the panel and audience also provided me with helpful perspectives, and I will consider these points as I move into the next stage of my business.”
Musquiz plans to use the cash and in-kind services to update her product packaging, as well as increase distribution and product testing to help extend product shelf life. Musquiz also has a food truck, Curcuma, located at 2207 E. Cesar Chavez Street, which also sells her winning product Golden Mylk.
“We are so proud to partner with the Austin Young Chamber on the Austin Fast Start pitch competition,” said Joy Miller, Marketing Manager for the Small Business Program. “This unique competition was a way to help our local small businesses grow or expand and involve the whole community, as they decide who will receive the prize.”
Austin Fast Start is a quarterly 90-minute competition designed to showcase traditional start-up businesses. The public is invited and will watch 4 – 5 short pitches (5 – 8 minutes to cover 5 slides) and vote for their favorite.
