Release Date: Jun. 14, 2017
Contact: Communications and Public Information Office     5129742220    Email

The City of Austin Public Works Department has begun the renaming process for the Slaughter Creek Management Unit today. This announcement initiates a 90-day public comment period, allowing for recommendations and/or feedback.

On April 5, the Environmental Commission voted to recommend the renaming of Slaughter Creek Management Unit, located at 9909 1/2 FM 1826, Austin, Tx., to the Mary Gay Maxwell Management Unit. Council approved resolution #20170420-033 directing the City Manager to initiate the proceedings as outlined in the Code of the City of Austin, Chapter 14-1-34.

The facilities/property renaming ordinance allows facilities and property to be named after an individual(s) (living or dead) or something other than an individual, such as a place or natural feature.  A suggestion for naming a facility/property must include:

  • If an individual - A biographical sketch; a description of the individual's involvement in the community; and the individual's connection, if any, to the facility/property.
  • If other than an individual, include justification for the suggested name.
  • An estimate of cost to the City for replacement of signs and plaques.

Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, September 11, 2017.  After the deadline, the Environmental Commission and Water and Wastewater Commission will call a public hearing on the suggested name(s) and make a recommendation to City Council for final approval.

Nomination may be submitted via mail to Public Works Department, Attn: Sandra Soler; 505 Barton Springs Rd.; Austin, Texas 78704 or via email: Public.Works@austintexas.gov
