The Division is currently pursing ASCLD/LAB ISO 17025 Accreditation. It is anticipated that the Division will accomplish this by the fall of 2015.
The Division is also accredited by the State of Texas through the Texas Forensic Science Commission. Any laboratory or other entity (public or private) conducting forensic analysis of physical evidence must be accredited by the TFSC in order for that laboratory's evidence or testimony to be admissible in a criminal proceeding under Code of Criminal Procedure Article 38.35. History of ASCLD/LAB
ASCLD/LAB was originally created in 1981 as a committee of its parent organization, the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD). In 1984, ASCLD/LAB became a separate corporate entity with its own Board of Directors elected by a Delegate Assembly comprised of the directors of accredited laboratories and laboratory systems. DFS currently has 6 member-seats in the Delegate Assembly, and has actively participated in leadership roles in this accrediting body.
ASCLD/LAB has accredited crime laboratories since 1982, making it the oldest and most widely known crime/forensic laboratory accrediting body in the world. It currently accredits most of the federal, state and local public crime laboratories, as well as most of the private crime laboratories in the United States. It also accredits forensic laboratories in six foreign countries on several continents. ASCLD/LAB offers laboratories the opportunity to earn accreditation in the various forensic disciplines that encompass the services generally provided by forensic laboratories.
ASCLD/LAB has been recognized as an ISO/IEC 17011 compliant accrediting body in the field of forensic science by the Inter American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC) since September 2008 and by the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) since April 2009. ASCLD/LAB is a signatory to both the IAAC Multi-lateral Recognition Arrangement and the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement.
