Who We Are
The City of Austin Development Services Department (DSD) is a team of approximately 500 dedicated public servants, who focus on administration of the City’s plan review, permitting, and inspection processes. We ensure compliant and sustainable development; protect the environment and urban forest; help ensure special events follow safety guidelines; and help homeowners, business owners, contractors, event managers, neighborhood groups, and other area residents understand and apply existing codes.

- Land Development Engineer

Land Development Engineers are responsible for performing general civil site plan review to determine compliance with local and state ordinances and regulations. The review responsibilities include private site roadway construction, site access and constructability, ADA/TAS compliance, and general site structures.
Development Services is seeking a candidate who has:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment
- Knowledge of the City of Austin and State of Texas transportation design criteria, standards, specifications, rules and regulations, and local ordinances
- Knowledge of ASCE 7-10, ACI 318-19, TMS 402/602-16
- Knowledge of the International Building Code
- Experience in general site civil and transportation engineering design
- Experience with the design and review of structural site structures, such as site walls and retaining wall systems
- Skill in communicating code requirements orally and in writing to design professionals
- Registered Accessibility Specialist (RAS) or related experience with TAS and ADA standards and regulations
- Excellent customer service skills

- Structural Engineer

Structural Engineers are responsible for performing a structural review of construction documents to determine building code compliance and the processing of permit applications for commercial projects varying from single-story business/retail to high-rise structures.
Development Services is seeking a candidate who has:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment
- Knowledge of ASCE 7-10, ACI 318-19, TMS 402/602-16, AISC 360-16, NDS 2018
- Knowledge of the International Building Code and all applicable codes
- Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings for complex projects
- Experience producing, reviewing, analyzing, and/or approving design specifications and drawings for commercial projects
- Ability to communicate scientific and technical matters, both orally and in writing, to non-technical individuals to engage in problem-solving and conflict resolution; to represent the City, and to partner effectively with citizens and development professionals

- Water Quality & Drainage Engineer

Drainage and Water Quality Review Engineers are responsible for performing drainage and water quality specific reviews of permitting and construction plans in order to ensure compliance with City of Austin Code and Criteria requirements. Reviews include evaluating proposed drainage and detention designs, analyzing off-site stormwater flow and infrastructure and easements requirements, protecting and upgrading publicly-owned storm infrastructure, reviewing and collaborating on water quality designs, and evaluating designs to remedy existing and possible erosion issues for private and public projects.
Development Services is seeking a candidate who has:
- Knowledge of engineering* principles and practices
- Knowledge of water quality controls and erosion analysis
- Skills to perform complex analysis to determine compliance with or deviation from land development codes and related state and local regulations, including the analysis of alternate methods of compliance or performance-based design
- Skill in communicating code requirements orally and in writing to design professionals
- Experience with drainage analysis
- Experience with GIS
- Excellent customer service skills
