I Am Parks and Recreation Exhibit Opens July 13

“I Am Parks and Recreation,” a photo exhibit honoring the people whose dedicated work makes Austin’s parks, programs, and public spaces happen, will be on display in the City Hall Atrium, 301 W. 2nd St., July 13–24, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Over three days in April 2026, pro‑bono by photographer Monica Liang‑Aguirre interviewed and photographed 14 frontline APR employees at their daily worksites – at pools, in parks, on golf courses, in a cemetery, at a recreation center, and up in the tree canopy. Each person stepped away from their busy day and took a few minutes to share what this work means to them. 

The quotes from staff touch on a range of topics including what it means to keep facilities safe, teach lifelong skills, care for natural spaces, create community connections, and welcome people from every background. These stories reflect everyday moments that shape the city’s parks – from teaching a tai chi class, to supporting an adapted sports team, to helping a child feel they belong.
