Leave No Trace in Natural and Urban Spaces

As Austin continues to grow, our parks, trails, and green spaces remain some of the most treasured parts of our city. To keep these natural areas healthy and accessible for generations to come, Austin Parks and Recreation, Austin Resource Recovery, and Austin Watershed Protection have partnered to raise awareness about the 7 Leave No Trace principles. These simple practices make a big difference in preserving the beauty and balance of our outdoor spaces.

Plan Ahead and Prepare

A safe and enjoyable outing starts with preparation. Dress for the weather and terrain, bring basic first aid, tell someone where you’re going, and know how to get help if you need it.

Travel on Durable Surfaces

Stay on established trails made of rock, gravel, or cement. Avoid makeshift footpaths to help protect vegetation and prevent erosion.

Dispose of Waste Properly

Carry out all trash, pet waste, and leftover food. Bring bags for pet waste, scoop the poop, and place it in designated disposal areas.

Leave What You Find

Help keep Austin’s natural and cultural resources intact. Leave rocks, plants, flowers, and other natural objects where they are. You can observe historic or cultural structures, just make sure not to touch or disturb them.

Be Careful with Fire

Before grilling in a City of Austin park, check current burn restrictions. Use designated grilling areas, never leave fires unattended, and consider using a lightweight stove for cooking and a lantern for light.

Respect Wildlife

Enjoy wildlife from a distance. Never follow, approach, or feed animals, and store food and trash securely. Keep dogs leashed unless you’re in one of Austin’s designated off‑leash areas.

Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Leave No Trace helps everyone enjoy outdoor spaces in a sustainable, welcoming way. By practicing these principles, we can all contribute to protecting Austin’s natural places.
