First Workers' success over the years is directly tied to community support and a demand for services provided through the program. In fiscal year 2006 the program placed over 25,000 jobs for day laborers. The economic value to day laborers and the Austin economy potentially exceeds 1 million dollars annually.
The First Workers’ Day Labor Center is a great resource for citizens, contractors, and business owners who need workers for a few hours, a day or longer. It is a safe place where customers and day laborers can come together and exchange day labor work for pay in a well organized and supervised environment.
Full-time, bilingual staff manage and operate the Center. Customers and workers are provided with direct assistance to help facilitate the hiring process. There is no paperwork for employers to fill out and no fee charged to anyone for this service. Employers can also call ahead to request a specific worker with whom they have worked previously or request a worker on line.
The center has plenty of laborers available every morning ready to go to work. Many of the workers possess skills in carpentry, painting, roofing, tile work and many other areas. The Center also provides a good base of non-skilled laborers to help fill employers’ needs. English-speaking, Spanish-speaking and bilingual workers are available. Hourly rates and job specifics or requirements are negotiated between employers and workers.
