Austin Parks and Recreation Forestry

Austin’s urban forest is a vital part of the city's infrastructure, providing environmental, economic, and social benefits to residents. The Forestry Team at Austin Parks and Recreation plays a crucial role in maintaining this resource, caring for the more than 300,000 trees on developed parkland including continuing to plant trees to enhance a thriving urban canopy.  

Our Forestry has a team of 35 Arborists and support staff that are responsible for planting, watering and maintaining trees across all of Austin’s 400 parks and green spaces. This team is made up of professional arborists, tree climbers, inspectors, and supervisors that perform their job with safety as a top priority.  

As Austin continues to grow, the challenges of maintaining a healthy urban forest become more complex. Development, climate change, limited resources, and increased demand on public spaces place additional pressure on the city’s tree canopy. In response, the Forestry Team collaborates with other city departments and stakeholders to ensure that trees are protected and integrated into development plans, public infrastructure, and climate adaptation strategies.

The city’s Urban Forest Plan outlines a long-term vision to create a diverse, sustainable, and accessible urban forest by 2034. This includes expanding tree canopy in underserved neighborhoods, improving tree species diversity, and using data to prioritize tree planting and maintenance efforts. Through these strategies, the Forestry Team works to ensure that Austin’s urban forest remains an essential asset for the community.
