Due to the heat, Austin Resource Recovery crews are allowed to take extra breaks to prevent heat-related illnesses. Staff are allowed to take these breaks in their air-conditioned vehicles. The City of Austin normally has a no-idling policy; however, that policy is waived during these breaks, as truck engines must be running for the A/C to work. Cooling off in the shade is often not an option since air temperatures can still exceed 100 degrees. Air-conditioned environments are the best way to keep workers cool for their health and safety during the summer months.
