temp-outdoor-sound

The City of Austin requires outdoor amplified sound at a commercial or non-residential establishment on a one-time basis for an activity that is consistent with the permanent legal use and occupancy level for the space OR at an event or activity for a gathering of less than 50 people in a space that is not consistent with the permanent legal use and/or occupancy level for the property. These permits are reviewed by the Development Services Department's Entertainment Services Group. A Temporary Use Permit may also be needed. Staff will provide additional direction if required.

How to Apply

step 1  Complete a Temporary Sound Permit Application

Download and complete the Temporary Sound Permit Application (PDF). Email the completed application to soundpermits@austintexas.gov. Be sure to attach the following along with your application form:

  • Dimensional site plan and stage layout
  • For a permanent establishment: Copy of Occupancy and the Occupant Load Card

step 2  Application is entered into system

The application is checked for completeness and entered into the system. Intake staff documents the business owner, the zoning of the property, and the distance to the residential property.

step 3  Pay required fees

Staff will notify you when your invoice is ready to be paid. Login to the AB+C Portal to make your payment. Your application status will remain pending until the required fees are received. NOTE: An additional permit fee, if not paid in advance, will be due upon final approval of the permit.

step 4  Review is conducted

Sound permit review is conducted to evaluate the potential impacts to the surrounding community. Reviewers will recommend approval or denial of the application and determine appropriate conditions and restrictions, including heightened restrictions related to decibel limits and/or hours of operations if needed to protect public health and safety.

step 5  Plan is created

A sound impact plan is created by the Entertainment Services Group, documenting the allowances, restrictions, and requirements associated with the approved permit. The permit and sound impact plan will be used and must be on-site at the establishment and available for inspection. The Temporary Use of Sound permit is valid only for the specific event dates listed.
