Irrigation System Check-Ups
We offer free irrigation system check-ups conducted by a licensed irrigator.
To qualify for a free check-up of your residential irrigation system, you must:
- Be a residential customer of Austin Water or a qualifying water provider
- Have an in-ground sprinkler system
- Have used more than 20,000 gallons in one month or more than 15,000 gallons in two consecutive months
- Submit your request within 60 days of the last day of the qualifying month
- Not have previously received a free check-up at your property
How to Schedule a Free Check-Up
Submit a "Free Irrigation Evaluation" request through the Austin Water Customer Portal. You can also email us or call 512-974-2199 and select option 4.
When requesting an appointment, have the following ready:
- Your name, phone number and the address where the check-up is needed
- The number of irrigation zones or stations
- Make and model of your irrigation controller
- Your irrigation company's name, if applicable, and whether the system or controller has changed since the qualifying month
- Any other details that may help with scheduling or the check-up
What's Included
Check-ups generally include:
- Documenting current controller settings, taking a meter reading and checking for leaks
- Running each station to measure flow rate and calculate water used by the current schedule
- Identifying opportunities for system improvements, equipment upgrades and landscape changes — rebates may be available
- Reviewing results and watering schedule recommendations with you
- Setting the controller to recommended settings
Check-ups are subject to staff availability and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you do not qualify or cannot get a check-up within your preferred timeframe, contact a licensed irrigator directly. Repair and proper operation of your irrigation system, including compliance with the city's watering schedules and water waste rules, is the responsibility of the property owner.
Residential Irrigation Inspections
Austin Water inspects new residential irrigation systems to confirm compliance with State of Texas and City of Austin irrigation standards. See our guide to Residential Irrigation Inspection (PDF) for more details.
Evaluate Your Own System
You can also check your own irrigation system to set an efficient watering schedule and catch problems before they appear on your water bill. See our Residential Water Use guide (PDF) to understand how system problems and leaks can add up over time.
