Surrendering your pet to the shelter should be your last resort. With more than 18,000 coming through our doors each year, the shelter is at or near capacity on a daily basis. We need your help to keep animals out of the shelter and in homes. We only accept pets from Travis County and the City of Austin.

Before you bring your pet to the shelter, please try the following:

  • Looking for pet friendly housing in Austin? Click here.

  • Looking for low or no cost medical services, heartworm treatment or spay/neuter? Read about services available to pet owners in our community.

Have you tried rehoming your pet on your own?

As the pet's current owner, you are in a better position to find a new home or your pet because you know them best. Please use this document to interview potential new families for your pet.

If you have made efforts to rehome your pet and have been unable to rehome it, you can surrender a pet, BY APPOINTMENT, at the Austin Animal Center.

Follow these steps:

1. Fill out the informationĀ of pet you need to surrender.

2. A staff member will contact you to discuss the profile and schedule an intake appointment.

3. At your scheduled appointment time, bring your pet(s) to the shelter with any available vet records.

Stray and feral cat surrender

The Austin Animal Center does not accept healthy feral or friendly stray cats for intake. The Austin Humane Society offers TNR services free to residents of Austin and Travis County. Healthy stray cats that are brought into the shelter will be sterilized, vaccinated and returned to the address where they were found.

The center is an open-intake shelter serving only Austin and Travis County. We only accept animals from our jurisdiction that need shelter regardless of age, health, species, breed or behavior, and no matter whether it is a stray or an owned animal.
