Net-Zero Hero: Ronda Rutledge

I’m helping to make Austin Net-Zero by driving an electric car.

Austin is green and we all want to keep it that way! As a community, we’re committed to reaching the target of Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which will ensure a safe, healthy, vibrant Austin for many years to come. Here’s the story of how one person can make a difference.

Meet Ronda Rutledge, Executive Director of the Sustainable Food Center (SFC). She serves on the Farmland Access and Preservation working group of the Austin/Travis County Sustainable Food Policy Board and is Vice Chair of One Voice Central Texas, advocating for policy changes that help support hunger relief and sustainable agriculture. Ronda contributes to Austin's Net-Zero goal in several ways, including driving a zero-emission electric vehicle. We spoke with Ronda on why she made the switch, the benefits and challenges, and what advice she has for others looking to contribute to Austin's Net-Zero goal. Read more below.

I wanted to offset carbon emissions by moving from a gas vehicle to an all-electric.

I decided to lease the vehicle initially because this technology is changing so quickly. So I’m leasing a Nissan Leaf and absolutely love it!

Not being able to drive out of town. Luckily, my husband drives a vehicle that I can use if I need to travel outside of Austin.

Never pulling into a gas station, or scheduling oil changes, or needing any maintenance really. These cars are the best!

Switch to either a hybrid or all-electric – the infrastructure is there now, and you can drive a surprising number of miles between charges.

Driving a 100% renewable energy powered electric car can reduce your personal carbon footprint by over 60%. Every action counts!
