The Disease Prevention and Health Promotion division of the department focuses on programs to screen for and prevent illnesses and health issues.
- The Office of Vital Records issues birth certificates and death certificates in the City of Austin.
- Chronic Disease Prevention works to promote health and quality of life to prevent and control disease.
- Diabetes offers programs in prevention, free classes, diabetes control, and healthy lifestyle.
- Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance is used to monitor disease trends over time and detect disease.
- Health Screening Services are provided for many communicable diseases.
- Hepatitis offers hepatitis immunizations and testing, perinatal Hepatitis B program, and Hepatitis C prevention.
- HIV/AIDS offers counseling, case management, education, and testing for those at high risk for contracting HIV.
- Immunizations offers immunization services for children (Shots for Tots) and some for adults ( Big Shots)
- Injury Prevention works with partners in the community to incporate injury prevention efforts into their ongoing programs.
- Pandemic Flu serves to educate the public about a possible global disease outbreak.
- Public Health Emergencies focuses on preparing the public for such emergencies as natural disasters and disease outbreaks.
- Refugee Services provide a health screening clinic for refugees relocating the Austin/Travis County area.
- Sexually Transmitted (STD) Diseases provides counseling and testing, outreach and education, case management, and HIV Surveillance.
- Tobacco Cessation helps people make long-lasting changes that support tobacco free living, including the Live Tobacco-Free Austin effort.
- Tuberculosis program provides evaluation of clients for latent and active TB disease.
