The Austin Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit is currently made up of 10 officers, 2 Corporals and 1 Sergeant. This number can increase during special events when the unit brings in auxiliary riders, to field more horses. The unit currently has 16 horses.

There are 2 full time civilian employees who work as stable attendants.

The Austin Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit has many duties. A shift is fielded during the day, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays and during the night on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday. The primary focus of the night shift is the entertainment district (6thStreet and the Warehouse District).  

Night Shift Duties include:

  • Support Ground Officers
  • Support the EMS and Fire Department
  • Crowd management & riot control
  • Special Events
  • Directed Patrols
  • Traffic and Parking Enforcement
  • Foot Pursuits
