Support for those impacted by the West 6th shooting is available Tuesday/Wednesday, 10am–8pm, at 1520 Rutherford Lane.
The City of Austin will mobilize a Victim Assistance Center to serve those impacted by the shooting incident on West 6th Street on Sunday morning. Austin Emergency Management, in coordination with Austin Police Victim Services and FBI Victim Services will operate the center from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at 1520 Rutherford Lane Building 4.
Services available at the Victim Assistance Center include:
- Spiritual Care
- Crisis Counseling
- Behavioral & Mental Health Services
- Therapy Animals
- Returning & Claiming of Personal Items from the Crime Scene
“Traumatic events like the one that occurred Sunday morning have significant impacts, both seen and unseen,” said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis. “A Victim Assistance Center can provide support to victims, as well as their families and friends, in both the short and long term. From coordinating mental health services and counseling to offering financial assistance for expenses resulting from the crime, the City of Austin will have resources available to help. We encourage anyone who experienced this incident in any capacity to access the resources and services they need.”
Following the shooting Sunday morning, the immediate area around the crime scene was closed off for evidence collection as part of the investigation. Those who left personal items behind at the scene may reclaim their personal effects at the Victim Assistance Center.
The public is asked not to bring food donations to the Victim Assistance Center or their own pets to serve as therapy animals. There will be licensed comfort facility animals already provided.
Those unable attend in person may contact APD Victim Services at 512-974-5037. Calls will be answered 24 hours a day for a limited period to ensure support remains accessible.
