The City of Austin is partnering with the Sustainable Food Center, Farmshare Austin, and GAVA (Go Austin!/Vamos Austin!) to offer fresh, affordable, convenient, and nutritious food.
Farm Stands are community-run markets that are located in familiar spaces and are easily walkable to residents of the community. Fresh produce from local farms is sold at reduced prices and all Farm Stands offer the SFC Double Dollars program, which doubles the value of purchases made using SNAP benefits. In collaboration with the Sustainable Food Center, community leaders run the farm stands encouraging others to be involved with the local food system and to increase their knowledge and resources to invest in their own health.
Mobile Markets are markets on wheels that are run by a local non-profit, Farmshare Austin. They prioritize areas that face geographic and/or economic barriers to buying fresh produce. The markets sell produce from local Austin farms and staple goods like pasta, olive oil and beans. Prices are reduced and all markets accept SNAP benefits and offer the SFC Double Dollars program to help with affordability.
Healthy Corner Stores
Healthy corner stores are convenience stores, including gas stations, that offer more than the typical amount and variety of healthier food items, including produce. In a partnership with The Food Trust, GAVA has supported eight corner stores in the 78744 and 78745 zip codes of South and Southeast Austin to increase their capacity to offer healthy food items. Healthy foods include both fresh and canned fruits and vegetables, and shelf goods that follow specific nutrition standards.
