The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified Joel Camarillo as the victim of the homicide in the 7200 block of S. Congress Ave.
On Monday, November 8, 2021, at approximately 8:43 p.m., 9-1-1 received a call of several shots fired and a person who appeared to have been shot in the 7200 block of S. Congress Ave. The caller also reported that the victim had been placed into a white sedan, and the driver of the white sedan was leaving the scene. APD officers arrived, and located a white sedan fitting the description exiting the complex. The vehicle was pulled over with two men inside. The male driver was detained, and the passenger was found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on the scene and quickly transported Joel Camarillo to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Camarillo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 9:23 p.m.
Shortly following this call, 9-1-1 received another call reporting that a male and a female appeared to have been shot (21-3121275). The location for this call was in the 5400 block of South Congress Ave. Two victims were in a vehicle. Austin-Travis County EMS responded and transported both victims to a local hospital where they were treated for their injuries. It was determined that these two calls were related. APD officers secured both scenes and contacted homicide investigators.
Homicide investigators and crime scene technicians responded to investigate and process both scenes. The case remains under investigation.
On November 9, 2021, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s conducted an autopsy and determined the official cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner, homicide.
