Through the preservation and exhibition of African American material culture, history, and aesthetic expression, the Carver Museum works to create a space where the global contributions of all Black people are celebrated. We accomplish this by telling stories about our local community and connecting those histories to larger narratives about Blackness. The Carver Museum is free and open to the public. Masks are encouraged inside the museum.

Workshop 2 in the Unleashing the Griot Within series focuses on the researching of genealogical resources to build your family tree. Come learn what happens when what was lost is now found. Participants are encouraged to bring funeral programs, yearbooks, or articles to use as resources to help with your research. You can bring your laptop so that you try some of the resources we will share. Space is limited, first come first serve. Free and open to the public!

Join us every first and third Tuesday of the month for Carver Kid's Storytime! Enjoy an hour of inspiring African American children's literature along with arts, crafts and a light snack. Join the fun on October 7, at 11:00 a.m. for the kickoff featuring special guest author, Angela Shelf Medearis! Free and open to the public, for children ages 3-6 years old.

WHAT I CARRY: Opening July 19, 2025 from 1-4pm “This exhibition is a tribute to the beauty and strength found in the everyday—drawing deeply from family photo albums, church gatherings, reunions, and quiet, personal moments. What I Carry invites viewers into a nostalgic journey rooted in African American life, shaped by the traditions, people, and spaces that defined my upbringing.” Open until October 11, 2025, What I Carry is a solo show by Dallas-based artist Riley Holloway. The Genealogy Center provides genealogy databases, workshops and seminars. All resources are free and open to the public.
Community Garden and Sunken Stage

The Carver community garden and sunken stage has breathed new life into the in the inactive Keeling pool. Recently repainted by Austin artist, Kelv Brown, this space is on its way to housing events in the fall. Renovated and reimagined by Greg Farrar, this space is outfitted by hand-made seating, greenhouses, and concession stands. Master Gardener Harvé Franks tends the planter boxes, as we continue to uplift this hidden gem situated directly beside the Freedom Plaza behind the museum.
