The Dougherty Story Hour is an inclusive, all-ages story time with stories selected to engage young artists! Stories will be read by Dougherty Arts Center staff and volunteers, selected from the Dougherty Arts Center’s school collections and the City of Austin Public Library. Our story time will offer inclusive opportunities for listeners to discuss topics covered and socialize with their community.

On Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 11am-12pm, we’ll be exploring the books “Frederick”, “The Shortest Day” and “The Insomniacs.”

“Frederick” Written and illustrated by Leo Lionni, 1967

“In this award-winning tale, Frederick and his fellow field mice learn the surest way to warm their hearts during winter.”

“The Shortest Day” Written by Suan Cooper, illustrated by Carson Ellis, 2019

“The opening words of Susan Cooper’s iconic poem have brought a hush to audiences for over forty years of theatre productions in celebration of the winter solstice and Yuletide season. The Shortest Day captures the magic behind the returning of seasonal light, the yearning for rituals that connect us with the generations that have gone before – and the hope for peace that we carry into the future. Together, Newbery Medal-winning author Susan Cooper and Caldecott Honor winner Carson Ellis bring alive the drama of the season, uniting revelers in celebrating light, thankfulness, and festivity at a time of rebirth.”

“The Insomniacs” Written by Karina Wolf, illustrated by The Brothers Hilts, 2012

“When Mr. and Mrs. Insomniac and little Mika move twelve time zones away, they have trouble staying awake during the day and make an interesting discovery about themselves.”
