Valore Lott grew up in East Austin and inherited the role of family historian when her Uncle Ira died in 2019. Her family group entrusted her with his research. She tells of her journey sorting his volumes of research and how his research led her to Oakwood Cemetery. In 1865, her great-great grandfather, Milton Wright, was one of the founding members of Wesley Chapel M.E. congregation. Her great-great grandmother, Betsy Madison, was one of the founding members of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church in 1875. Both and numerous other family members are buried at Oakwood Cemetery.
She will discuss the history of the Madisons and the Wrights and how their lives in the Austin area in the 1800s following the Civil War, during Emancipation, and the Reconstruction years following. She will also tell how their lives have directly affected her life and the Austin community.
