Net-Zero Hero: Catalina Berry

I’m helping to make Austin Net-Zero by recycling and encouraging others to recycle.

Meet Catalina Berry, Outreach Coordinator for Seton Health Plan. Catalina contributes to Austin's Net-Zero goal in several ways, including being a pro-recycler and upcycler. Catalina is always finding new ways to conserve, reuse, and inspire others to do the same. We spoke with Catalina about her successes, challenges, and the advice she has for others looking to live Net-Zero.

What inspired you to take action?

Why wouldn’t someone want to take action? It’s so easy to be green and there are so many benefits – from saving the earth to saving money!

How did you do it?

I recycle any and everything! My yogurt containers become my “Tupperware.” I have a recycle bin for the items I no longer need, and I have reusable bags for when I go shopping. Besides recycling, my car is a Ford Fusion hybrid, so it is more earth-friendly. I also have my timer for the shower to try to keep it to 5 minutes. And I try not to turn on the AC until I can’t take it anymore! There are so many ways to do it – we just have to be aware of what we are doing when we are doing it.

What's been the toughest part?

Taking shorter showers!

Have there been any unexpected benefits?

I don’t really think of it this way, but I would say the cheaper energy bills!

What advice do you have for others?

I remind myself regularly how blessed and fortunate I am to have the things that I have, such as electricity, water, air conditioning, heat, etc. We should never take these things for granted — choose to pay it forward for future generations!
