Zero Waste Business Rebate helps restaurants save money, keep customers happy
By Allison Strupeck
True or false: Disposables are cheaper than reusables.
False! Restaurants that switched from single-use to reuseable service ware consistently saved money for their businesses—according to Upstream, the non-profit authors of “Reuse Wins”.
By investing in certified compostable containers for take out—or ceramic, porcelain, glass, or metal service ware for dine-in—restaurants can boost their bottom line while also helping the planet. Reuse by restaurants will play a big part in solving the plastic and climate crises, as spotlighted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Not to mention, customers tend to love it.
“In today’s climate-conscious world, zero waste matters to consumers,” the Upstream report said. “When restaurants take it upon themselves to do better, people take notice, post reviews, tell their friends and keep coming back.”
In Austin, restaurants that dream of serving their customers with real dishes and sustainable cutlery have an incredible resource: the City of Austin’s Zero Waste Business Rebate! Food-permitted businesses can apply for up to $3,000 in rebates on eligible expenses including:
-
Replacing single-use service ware with reuseable or compostable alternatives, for food take-out or on-site service.
-
Setting up storage space or units, such as shelving and bins, for organizing reusable service ware.
