Each summer, City staff use their own money to buy school supplies to Austin students in need. Last year, staff donated 1,428 backpacks and 236 boxes of supplies. Join us in helping ensure student success this fall.

Backpack Drop Off

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 26, at City Hall

City Employees can purchase any of the items on the list and drop off an empty backpack and/or supplies on July 26. Please do not include food or money in the backpack; however, notes of encouragement are always welcome!

2019 School Supply List

  • Backpack
  • #2 pencils (mechanical for middle & high school)
  • Colored pencils
  • Erasers
  • Pens (blue or black ink)
  • Lined notebook paper (Wide:elem, College:mid & high)
  • Composition notebook (Wide:elem, College:mid & high)
  • 70 sheet spiral notebook (Wide:elem, College:mid & high)
  • Folders with brads & pockets
  • Binders (2":elem & mid, 1.5":high)
  • Package of 5 tab dividers

For Elementary Backpack add:

  • Crayons (thick & thin)
  • Colored markers (thick)
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors (round tip)

For Middle and High School Backpack add:

  • Scientific calculator
  • Flash drive
  • Highlighters

In case you missed it last year: City of Austin employees donated 1,418 backpacks for Austin students in 2017. That was a new record for this event -- until the 1,428 donated in 2018!
