The Dottie Jordan Neighborhood Park Playground Renovation project will focus on providing a new, enjoyable playground in Dottie Jordan Park that meets and exceeds accessibility and playground standards while providing play opportunities for children of all abilities. Background
The City of Austin purchased the 11.5 acres of parkland that comprises the Dottie Jordan Park in November 1973. The City's purchase guaranteed that the land remains specifically for public park and recreation use only.
The park site includes a recreation center, a playscape, two tennis courts, a basketball court, and a swimming pool. The Dottie Jordan Recreation Center offers activities for youth, teens, and senior citizens, including therapeutic recreation programs for teens and adults with disabilities. This project will focus on improving the playground area for the therapeutic recreation program.
Project Description
The purpose of Dottie Jordan Park playground renovation was to provide an inclusive, accessible playground equipment and surrounding access that meets today’s playground safety standards. Our goal was to improve the quality of play experiences for stakeholders at the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center and the surrounding community. The project took special care to preserve and protect the surrounding environment and mature trees. The concrete path leading to the playground was replaced as part of the project.
Objectives
- Improve accessibility and inclusivity for children of all ages and abilities;
- Provide a variety of play experiences to allow for maximum enjoyment for the Rec Center’s therapeutic program
- Install new swing set
- Preserve and protect the existing trees surrounding the play equipment; and
- Plant new trees in the fall of 2022 for continued long-term shade

Anticipated Schedule

- May 2022 – August 2022: Procurement and shipping (Complete)
- October 2022: Construction begins (Complete)
- January 2023: Equipment Installation (Complete)
- March 2023: Construction completion and final safety inspection (Complete)
- April 2023: Open to the Public (Complete)
