Be an Austin Lifeguard!


Welcome to the Aquatic Division, part of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. The Aquatic Division operates 45 public aquatic facilities, which includes 7 Regional pools, 3 Community pools, 22 Neighborhood pools, 1 Wading pool, Barton Springs Pool and 11 splash pads. In addition to coordinating open water events and swim team competitions, we also offer instructional programs such as masters swimlifeguard and water safety training and youth and adult swim lessons.


For 2023, Summer seasonal employees, which include lifeguards and camp counselors, will now be eligible to earn up to an additional $750 throughout the summer.  The bonus structure is tied to hours worked, meaning an employee must work a certain number of hours between May 21stand August 12th to be eligible.  The payouts are as follows: 
    • 200 hours worked = $250 bonus
    • 300 hours worked = $250 bonus
    • 400 hours worked = $250 bonus

How to become an Austin Lifeguard?

1. Apply Now!

The Aquatic Division hires both Part-Time and Full-time, benefitted Lifeguarding positions.  Our hiring process is simple. All applicants need to complete an online application through the City of Austin Jobs website. Applicants must be 15 years of age or older on or before their final day of training.  Follow us on Facebook for the latest information.



2. Get Hired!

Training classes are available throughout the year!  Complete your paperwork and see our training schedule below to find out when you can get certified.

The Aquatic Division conducts training and hires staff year-round. After submitting an online application, you should receive an email from the Aquatic Division within 48-72 business hours. This email will contain all additional paperwork and information necessary to get trained and get hired.  You must submit all paperwork and employment verification documents in order to register for a Lifeguard class.  Should you have questions, you can call 512-974-9330 Monday through Friday, 8AM-5PM or email us at

3. Get Trained!

The Aquatic Division takes lifeguard training and certification very seriously. Classes are offered for first-time lifeguards, returning lifeguards that need re-certification, and lifeguards that are interested in becoming an instructor.  StarGuard Elite classes are available for applicants of the City of Austin only and this certification is valid only at City of Austin pools.

4. Get Working!

Once you have completed steps 1-3, you're almost ready to start saving lives.  Once onboarded, you will be contacted to sign up for scheduling and to attend your first inservice training, so find out what pool is closest to you!
