Suspect: Brandon Michael Munoz, Hispanic male, 37 years old
The Austin Police Department (APD) continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting that occurred during the late evening hours of Monday, August 8, 2022.
At approximately 11:13 p.m., an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on a motorcyclist at US Highway 290 and Cameron Road. As the motorcycle stopped, the driver, Mr. Brandon Munoz, began running from the officer southbound on Cameron Road. The officer got out of his vehicle and chased after Mr. Munoz. As the officer chased the suspect, he observed Mr. Munoz with a firearm in his hand. The officer repeatedly gave commands for Mr. Munoz to drop the gun.
A Texas DPS trooper was in the area, monitoring APD radio, and responded to assist the APD officer in the foot pursuit. Mr. Munoz ran towards a shopping center at the intersection and accessed an unrelated vehicle that was parked, waiting for someone else. Mr. Munoz tried to carjack the vehicle, telling the operator to begin driving.
At that time, the APD officer and DPS trooper discharged their firearms, striking Mr. Munoz while sitting in the vehicle. The person initially seated in the vehicle was not injured and quickly exited the vehicle. A gun was recovered at the scene.
APD officers were able to extract Mr. Munoz from the vehicle and begin lifesaving measures. EMS transported Mr. Munoz to a local hospital with critical injuries.
This incident is captured on body-worn camera and dash camera video. The APD officer involved has less than one year in the Department, having graduated from the APD Training Academy in January 2022. Per APD protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave. APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit along with the Texas DPS Rangers in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
