Location: 7905 San Felipe Boulevard
Suspect (deceased): Thomas Dray Price, white male, 44 years of age
The Austin Police Department (APD or Department) is conducting an investigation into the Officer-Involved Shooting that occurred on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Summer Grove apartment complex located at 7905 San Felipe Boulevard, Austin, Williamson County, Texas.
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, at approximately 12:14 a.m., Austin 9-1-1 received a call reporting there was a subject walking around the apartment complex with a gun. An additional caller reported seeing a white male wearing black clothing walking around the complex with a black rifle. Multiple callers advised hearing gunshots and that the subject had four to five Hispanic males at gunpoint. At this time APD officers were dispatched to the call.
At approximately 12:22 a.m., officers arrived on scene and entered the complex on foot. Officers searched the apartment complex for the disturbance and any injured persons. Officers located an individual who provided an additional description of the suspect and directed the officers to the suspect’s last seen location.
At approximately 12:33 a.m., officers moved further into the apartment complex and located several subjects in front of an apartment building and made contact with the subjects. Officers identified themselves stating, “Austin Police, show me your hands,” and repeated the same command in Spanish.
At approximately 12:35 a.m., an armed individual, later identified as Thomas Dray Price, emerged from the breezeway of the building holding a firearm. Officers gave commands to Mr. Price to include, “hands up and drop the gun” several times. Mr. Price did not comply with the officers’ commands, raised a firearm and pointed the firearm in the direction of the officers. Two officers discharged their Department-approved firearms, striking Mr. Price.
Officers approached Mr. Price who was unresponsive on the ground holding a firearm in his hand and detained him in handcuffs. Officers administered first aid and attempted life-saving measures until Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) arrived on scene.
At approximately 1:11 a.m., Mr. Price was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced deceased at 1:39 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024. No other individuals involved in the disturbance were injured.
This incident was captured on the officers’ body-worn cameras. Per APD policy, the video will be released within ten business days. One APD officer who discharged their Department-approved firearm has four years of service and the other officer has two years of service with the Department.
APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Williamson County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
