The Austin Police Department (APD) announces the arrests of multiple suspects involved in citywide reckless driving "Street Takeover" incidents that occurred on the night of February 18, 2023, and continued into the morning of February 19, 2023. The Department's proactive collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies around the state resulted in identifying 17 suspects as part of Operation Burnout. The operation was created to apprehend, disrupt, and deter criminal behavior associated with 'street takeover' incidents caused by reckless driving.
During the ongoing operation, APD’s Organized Crime Division Violent Crime Interdiction Unit and our local and state law enforcement partners investigated multiple criminal offenses during the reckless driving incidents. Over thirty arrest warrants were issued, and in some cases, vehicles were seized. Suspects were located and arrested in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin.

The Department continues to work with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office as the cases are ongoing. This operation could not have been accomplished without the work of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston Vehicle Crimes Task Force, the San Marcos Police Department, the New Braunfels Police Department, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the San Antonio Police Department, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, the Live Oak Police Department, the Selma Police Department, the Houston Police Department, the Dallas Police Department, the Westlake Police Department, and Rollingwood Police Department.
The APD Organized Crime Division is still working to identify additional suspects and vehicles and will seek arrest warrants as more evidence becomes available.
The department remains committed to stopping this conduct. Lawbreaking in this manner will result in enforcement and arrest. Our community's safety is the number one priority for APD.
