Three homes built on lots smaller than the minimum size currently required by code

The City schedules two new open houses on May 6 and May 8.

Austin residents have more opportunities to learn about proposed code updates aimed at increasing housing options throughout the city and supporting the Project Connect light rail investments. The City has added two new in-person open houses to the calendar, one at Anderson High School and another at the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center, ahead of the City Council’s vote on the draft amendments.

“We’re looking forward to reaching into more parts of our city and engaging with residents on these proposed amendments and the benefits they offer to our community,” said Planning Director Lauren Middleton-Pratt. “I encourage as many Austinites as possible to attend at least one of these meetings and learn how these proposed changes could not only make housing more attainable, but also expand access to buses and light rail in the future.”

Residents who were unable to attend the first scheduled open house at the Central Library on Wednesday, April 17, now have three more options to engage with staff about the proposals, which include the initiative known as HOME Phase 2 and the creation of an equitable transit-oriented development overlay along the first phase of the Project Connect rail routes.

    • 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
    • 1165 Angelina St., 78702

At all three events, staff will be available to discuss the proposed amendments, which would:

  • Reduce the minimum amount of land needed to build one home.
  • Modify compatibility rules that limit the height of buildings adjacent to single-family homes.
  • Encourage transit-supportive development and affordable housing along the Project Connect Phase 1 Light Rail corridors and Priority Extensions.
  • Create a new Electrical Vehicle Charging Use that would define where EV charging facilities could be located and prevent them from becoming concentrated within active or residential areas.

More information about each of the proposed code amendments can be found at speakupaustin.org/ldcupates.

In addition to the open houses, the City will hold three public hearings on the proposed amendments at Austin City Hall, 301 W. 2nd St. on the following dates:
