On Friday, May 12, 2023, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to the intersection of Neches street and 7th street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a sedan driven by David Earl Bedford Jr. Bedford evaded officers traveling east at a high rate of speed on E 7th Street. The sedan crashed into a moving train in the 2300 block of E 7th Street. Bedford was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

This incident is being investigated as Austin's 35th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 35 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 37 fatal crashes resulted in 38 deaths.
