FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The City of Austin, in partnership with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, has canceled the July 4th, 2025 Star Spangled Fest event and fireworks show at Auditorium Shores due to saturated event grounds, unpredictable weather conditions and increased safety concerns.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for the western part of Travis County effective until 4:30 p.m.. 1-3” of rain has already fallen, and up to an additional 2” of rainfall is forecasted. Life-threatening flash flooding is anticipated to impact the area, especially along major waterways, creeks, streams, low-lying roadways, urban areas, and underpasses.

Flash flooding is extremely dangerous and can happen with little warning. Please take the following precautions to protect yourself and your family:

  • Avoid area waterways. Waterways, large and small, are extremely dangerous during flash flooding.
  • Do not drive through flooded roads. Just six inches of water can stall a car; two feet can sweep it away. Turn around, don’t drown.
  • Avoid walking through moving water. As little as six inches can knock you off your feet.
  • Stay informed. Monitor local weather updates, emergency alerts, and warnings from the National Weather Service.
  • Have an evacuation plan. Know your routes and be ready to leave quickly if conditions worsen.
  • Move to higher ground immediately if you are in a low-lying area or near a stream, creek, or drainage channel.
  • Keep emergency supplies on hand—water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) also announced plans to open multiple floodgates at Wirtz and Starcke Dams later this afternoon to release storm runoff from the Llano River flowing into Lake LBJ, upriver from Lake Travis.

The City of Austin has been in contact with neighboring jurisdictions that have been affected by the devastating flooding in Kerr and San Saba counties and has deployed multiple resources from Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department to assist in the flood response.

Multiple road closures will be in effect, both due to the weather and to allow for the safe loading out of equipment that was staged for the Star Spangled Fest. Please visit AtxFloods for the latest information about weather-related road closures in the area.
