Join the Office of Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment’s Old Bakery and Emporium for the opening reception of Raised to Engage: Past and Present on Saturday, July 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Old Bakery & Emporium located at 1006 Congress Ave. The exhibit will feature paintings, sculptures and ceramics created by artist Ricardo Hernandez over the past five decades.

Ricardo (Rick) Hernandez is a painter, potter and sculptor whose chief interests lie in reflecting the richness of his life experiences, family, faith, work and play. He earned his BFA at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1976 with a major in ceramics and a minor in sculpture. Since the 1970’s his work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions. Raised to Engage: Past and Present, Ricardo Hernandez, A Life in Arts, will be Rick’s first one-man show.

After graduating from UTEP, Hernandez’s career began in 1977 when he served for three years as an Artist in Residence for the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). In 1980, he was appointed to lead the Emergency School Aids Act artist residency program at TCA and went on to serve in various capacities at the agency until his retirement in 2007 as Executive Director. As an arts administrator, he has led numerous initiatives, projects and workshops, as well as participated on advisory panels throughout the United States and for the National Endowment for the Arts. Ricardo has also served on a variety of national and local arts organization Boards. For the last six years, he has served as the director of Imagine Art’s AmeriCorps Artist in Residence Program in Austin, Texas.
