The Office of Police Oversight is inviting the community to go behind the scenes with an unprecedented look into the process for filing complaints against Austin Police Department officers.
The Office of Police Oversight (OPO) is opening its doors at the first-ever Community Open House, a special opportunity for Austinites to connect directly with staff and leadership, ask questions, and learn how OPO works to promote transparency, accountability, and community trust in local law enforcement. OPO staff will be in person to address questions about the oversight system, provide space for dialogue, and offer ways for community members to get involved.
"Whether you're curious about how oversight works or want to share your personal experience, our staff will be there to address all of your questions, comments, and concerns," explained Gail McCant, Director of the Office of Police Oversight.
What Community Members Will Experience:
- Explore the complaint process: Learn how civilian complaints and compliments are submitted and reviewed step by step.
- Hear from OPO Director Gail McCant: Learn more about OPO's mission and how OPO advances police accountability in Austin.
- Meet OPO's policy team: Gain insights into the research, data, and national best practices that drive recommendations for systemic change.
- Get Involved in community initiatives: Discover how OPO partners with the community to increase awareness and transparency and encourage dialogue around police oversight.

About the Office of Police Oversight
The City of Austin's Office of Police Oversight is separate and independent from the Austin Police Department. Our mission is to provide impartial oversight of the Austin Police Department's conduct, practices, and policies to enhance accountability, inform the public, increase transparency, and create sustainable partnerships throughout the community. We accept feedback about Austin police officers' conduct through complaints and compliments. We also conduct policy analysis and research to make recommendations to improve APD's policies and practices. We publish documents on officer discipline and conduct and engage with community members through public events and education.
