In alignment with electric grid enhancement efforts outlined in the Electric System Resiliency Plan, Austin Energy recently energized a new substation to add energy capacity for rapidly growing parts of North Austin. The new Kramer Substation will increase reliability to existing circuits in that area and eventually feed a new mixed-use development in North Austin.

Substations are an integral part of the electric system, connecting major, grid-scale equipment to power lines serving local areas. They are essential to powering homes and businesses.

“The Domain area is experiencing rapid growth and this is a key step in meeting the energy needs of area residents and businesses,” said Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy General Manager. “This new substation adds capacity, improves reliability and helps Austin Energy adapt to changing grid conditions.”

Austin Energy began planning for the new Kramer Substation in 2019, construction started in 2024. The total cost of the substation was approximately $25 million.

The project highlights Austin Energy’s commitment to building a stronger system that can grow to support new technologies and energy resources, enhancing reliability and resiliency for customers.
