Benefits of composting

Composting through Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is easy and impactful. You can cut waste, enrich local soil, and support our city's zero waste goals by composting more.

Put organic items like food scraps, yard trimmings, and paper in your green composting cart for weekly pickup. The cart must be at the curb by 5:30 a.m. on your collection day. Make sure the lid is closed and do your best to keep the cart at least five feet from other carts or obstructions. This makes it safer for crews.

ARR collects and delivers compostables to private processing facilities. The facilities process the material into nutrient-rich compost. This compost is then available to Austinites to use in their gardens and landscapes. Compost enriches soil, retains moisture, and promotes healthy plant growth.

Composting helps cut greenhouse gas emissions. This is better than throwing the material in landfills, which contribute to global warming. Composting every banana peel or yard clipping helps create healthier soil. It also leads to cleaner air and a more sustainable city. Start small, stay consistent, and invite your neighbors to take part.
