Ramón Batista serves as Assistant City Manager for Public Safety for the City of Austin, overseeing the City’s public safety departments and working to strengthen coordination, innovation, and community-focused public safety strategies.

Batista brings nearly four decades of public safety leadership experience. Prior to joining Austin, he served as Chief of Police for Santa Monica, California, where he led a department of more than 400 personnel and managed a $130 million budget. His tenure focused on rebuilding staffing levels, modernizing technology systems, and advancing programs addressing homelessness, mental health, and community safety.

Previously, Batista served as Chief of Police in Mesa, Arizona, and spent more than 30 years with the Tucson Police Department in a variety of leadership roles.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Safety and Homeland Security and a master’s degree in Leadership from Grand Canyon University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
