District 1 Council Member

Council Member Natasha Harper Madison

Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison serves as the dedicated representative for Austin City Council District 1, known colloquially as the Eastside, a region intricately tied to her roots as it is where she was born and raised. Natasha's formative years bestowed upon her a profound understanding of her community's strengths and unique challenges.

Fueled by invaluable insights gained as a prosperous small business owner on the Eastside, she embarked on a journey of advocacy.

Demonstrating her commitment, she assumed the role of president within the East 12th Street Merchants Association and went on to establish East Austin Advocates, a nonprofit committed to facilitating access to essential resources for under-represented residents, thereby fostering their success.

Harper-Madison's passion for community-level activism ignited her aspiration to pursue public office, a goal she realized through her successful campaign for City Council in 2018. In a testament to her leadership and dedication, in 2020, her peers elected her as mayor pro-tem, making her the second Black woman on the Austin City Council to hold this esteemed title.

As the chair of the Housing and Planning committee, she not only presides over key policy decisions in that domain but also actively contributes as a member of the Mobility committee. Additionally, she holds a position on the Transportation Policy Board of the Capital Area Metropolitan Organization, where her insights play a crucial role in shaping transportation policies.

Amidst her fervent advocacy for affordability, progressive mobility, and the expansion of economic opportunities, Harper-Madison stands as a resilient breast cancer survivor and takes pride in being the mother of four amazing kids.
