In 2018 City of Austin voters approved a General Obligation Bond that included funding for the renovation of this beloved aquatic facility in Southeast Austin. The community engagement process for the renovation project will begin in early 2022. The aquatic facility at Montopolis Neighborhood Park will continue to provide a special community gathering place in Southeast Austin.

Background

Montopolis Neighborhood Park is located southeast of downtown Austin. The 7.61 acre site is home to a new community center completed in 2020 and a pool that originally opened in 1979.

On February 1, 1974, Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) purchased the Montopolis Community Center from Montopolis Community Center, Inc. for $150,000 and also received five surrounding acres to develop into a park. PARD went on to spend $236,000 on renovations that year. Outside improvements included a new playground, lighting for the softball field, replacing the ballfield backstop, landscaping the grounds, and adding walkways. Building renovations included repainting, plumbing work, air conditioning modifications, and the addition of partitions.

In 1976, the Planning Commission began emphasizing a need for swimming pools throughout all communities and expedited the construction of a swimming pool in Montopolis Park. The Montopolis Pool was also championed later that year by the Parks and Recreation Board, and a request for proposals (RFP) for the pool was issued in December 1977.  The pool has served the community for 44 years.

Montopolis Pool

Project Description

The 2018 Aquatic Vision Plan  adopted in 2018, calls for Montopolis Pool to be renovated as a community pool featuring a 7000 square foot pool and a 9000 square foot pool deck. The pool will include new play opportunities, improved lighting, and shade structures. The existing pool building will be lightly renovated and an additional pool building will be built to provide a family restroom, office space, and a training/party room that can be used by the community.

The project will also participate in the City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, which will commission a permanent art installation at the pool facility.

Anticipated Timeline

  • Community Engagement start: January 2022
  • Construction start: Summer 2023
  • Construction end: Winter 2024-2025
