National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that fosters positive relationships and communication between community members and police. It encourages community awareness, involvement, and provides law enforcement accessibility in order to make our neighborhoods safer.

Thousands of Central Texas neighbors participate in National Night Out, which is traditionally held on the first Tuesday in October annually. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support and participation in crime prevention efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and community relationships.

During the event, the residents in neighborhoods throughout Austin and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters, EMS medics, and Code Enforcement. Events such as cookouts, block parties, and neighborhood walks occur throughout the city and nationwide.
