Austin scientists are finding high levels of nitrates and increasing detections of the pesticide atrazine, in monitoring samples. Both are believed to be tied to use of weed and feed products that contain fertilizer and pre emergent weed killer.

The “Avoid Weed and Feed” campaign was launched in March 2007 in order to reduce the number and frequency of detections of fertilizer nutrients and weed killers in Austin’s waterways. The goal of the campaign is to help homeowners improve their lawn and landscape fertilizer and pesticide choices, application rates and disposal habits.
