Free Wildfire Preparedness Resources from Austin Fire’s Wildfire Division

A Message from Austin Fire’s Wildlife Division

Many areas of Austin face high wildfire risk. Even small wildfires can threaten life, property, and business in Austin. Austin Fire’s Wildfire Division offers free resources for homeowners, property managers and members of the development community to understand and reduce their wildfire risk.

Step One: Understand Wildfire Risk
Considerations for calculating wildfire risk include proximity to wildland, structure separation distance, topography, and fuels. Interested parties can view a property’s wildfire risk score at ATXWildfireHub.com.

Step Two: Mitigate Wildfire Risk
Austin Fire’s Wildfire Division provides free resources to mitigate the risk of wildfire. Our Low-Cost Retrofit List identifies low- and zero-cost ways to mitigate wildfire risk to homes from embers, radiant heat, and direct flame contact. Our Fire-Smart Landscaping tip sheet includes advice for installing, improving and maintaining your outdoor landscape to be healthier and more resistant to fire.

Homeowners and property managers can also request a free and confidential Structure Ignition Zone Evaluation (SIZE) from Austin Fire’s Wildfire Division. During a SIZE, Wildfire Mitigation Specialists will walk the exterior of a home or property and assess vulnerability to ignition by embers, direct flame contact and radiant heat during a wildfire.

Access free resources and sign up for a SIZE at ATXWildfireHub.com.

Step Three: Spread the Word!
There is wildfire preparedness strength in numbers: the more community members who understand and take action to reduce wildfire risk, the more protected the whole community. We encourage you to share these resources with family and friends and in your workplace and neighborhood. Reach out to Austin Fire’s Wildfire Division at FireWildfire@austintexas.gov for more information or to request a wildfire awareness presentation.
