Up to $10,000 offered for leads in effort to protect AT&T’s critical infrastructure in the Austin area

AT&T is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for specific and detailed information that leads to arrest and conviction for copper cable thefts or the attempted sale or purchase of stolen AT&T copper cable in Austin.

“Copper theft often damages our critical communications infrastructure, which can cause network outages that leave our customers without the ability to connect,” said Bird Holmquist, Director of External Affairs, AT&T Texas. “Maintaining high-quality service is a top priority, and we’re working closely with law enforcement to investigate any incidents.”

AT&T is collaborating with Austin Police Department (APD) to address this community issue.

“When residents are cut off from essential services or a way to contact loved ones during an emergency, it’s a serious problem,” said APD Assistant Chief Eric Fitzgerald. “Copper theft impacts everyone. That’s why we need to spread awareness and work together to stop those responsible.”

The public should report any unmarked (non-AT&T) vehicles or individuals cutting and removing cable.

“Copper theft and vandalism of critical communications infrastructure are serious matters that present a significant risk to public safety in our communities,” said Travis County Judge Andy Brown. “I applaud the Austin Police Department and AT&T for working together to announce this reward and for their continued work on this issue.”

Tipsters with information can remain confidential and should contact APD and AT&T:

  • To provide information regarding thefts that are actively occurring, contact 911.
  • To provide tips and leads regarding thefts previously committed, contact APD Detective Rocky Reeves at (512) 974-5308 or APDCommericalBurglary@austintexas.gov.
  • After contacting APD, tipsters should call AT&T Global Security & Investigations at (800) 807‐4205.
  • The AT&T reward is valid for leads received by Nov. 1, 2025.
