The Austin Police Department (APD) continues to address the ongoing issue of impaired driving, which remains a daily concern throughout the city. The problem tends to intensify during holiday periods, and this year’s Independence Day weekend was no exception.
Between the night of Wednesday, July 3, and the morning of Saturday, July 6, APD officers made 39 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
The safety of our community remains the top priority of the Austin Police Department. Each impaired driver removed from the roadway represents one less threat to the lives of others. However, enforcement alone is not enough. APD, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department are committed to raising awareness and reinforcing the message that driving under the influence is not only illegal, it is dangerous and entirely unacceptable.
APD urges all residents and visitors to make responsible choices when consuming alcohol. Utilize ride-share services, public transportation, or a designated driver to ensure you and others get home safely.
Together, we can help keep Austin’s roads safe, during the holidays and every day.
Don't drink and drive.
