FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Case: 25-0610250

Date: March 2, 2025

Time: 2:30 a.m.

On March 2, 2025, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) Officers at the intersection of 6th Street and Neches Street observed a physical disturbance in a crowd of people. Officers identified an intoxicated individual in a black dress that was attempting to engage in physical confrontations with other pedestrians in the area. Officers blew their whistles, a form of de-escalation, to get the crowd to disperse and made their way through the crowd. Those involved in the disturbance began to disperse, including the subject in the black dress. However, the subject relocated to the side of a nearby building and swung a closed fist twice at the face of another individual. At this time, officers again approached the subject to stop the assault. The officer continued to blow their whistle and called out “Austin Police” to the individual. The subject began moving and pulling their arms away from the officers, who were attempting to detain them. An officer grabbed the subject’s left arm and attempted to turn the subject around by pulling them back. As the officer pulled the subject’s arm, the subject went to the ground on their knees and then hit their face on the ground. The subject was detained in handcuffs, evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) and arrested for Disorderly Conduct - Fighting.

A supervisor reviewed the incident on-scene and notified the Force Review Unit of the use of force, which is standard practice. The Force Review Unit reviewed the incident and determined the use of force was within law and policy.

In the interest of transparency and to help maintain public trust, APD is releasing a more comprehensive video which provides more insight into the subject's conduct as officers arrived on scene and initiated contact with the subject.
