Austin Police launched a new crime reduction strategy in Northeast Austin to address a prominent violent crime hot spot. The area of 900 E. Braker Lane has been plagued with violent crime, weapons violations, sex crimes, and alcohol violations for several years. In an effort to reduce violence, address community concerns, and improve safety for our community, a Place Network Investigation (PNI) was piloted at this site.
The PNI project recognizes that crime is highly concentrated, and patterns of crime concentration generally persist in the same locations over time, despite repeated police intervention. After several months of data analysis and research, Austin Police received training on PNI and crime reduction strategies. The Northeast Area Command brought partner agencies together to collaborate on a comprehensive strategy to eradicate the crime and restore order for our community. Using strategic analysis of data from the last two years, coupled with collaborative partners and enforcement efforts, yielded positive results on September 26, 2025.
On September 26, 2025, Austin Police Edward (Northeast Austin) patrol, Austin Police Organized Crime Division (OCD) including the Gang, Human Trafficking and Major Crime Suppression Unit, District Representative Officers, North Metro Tactical, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), and Victim Services partnered with Austin Fire and the Fire Marshal’s Office, City of Austin Development Services, City of Austin Law, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to initiate a large scale operation at Diablos and Michelobos.
The operation included the execution of a search warrant at Diablos and inspection of Michelobos. Items of evidence were seized during the search warrant, and three arrests were made. Some of the items seized included illegal gaming machines and alcoholic beverages. The investigation is still on-going as a result of the search warrant.
An inspection of the licensed premises was conducted at Michelobos. Numerous violations were observed, and citations were issued by the Austin Fire Marshal’s Office. Additional alcohol was seized by TABC.
