The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department invites students to enter the 2025 Flood Safety Video Contest.

The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department invites students to enter the 2025 Flood Safety Video Contest. Participants will create a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) that highlights the importance of the life-saving message: “Turn Around - Don’t Drown®” when encountering flooded roads. Austin lies in the heart of Flash Flood Alley, which makes flood safety education critical for protecting lives during heavy rains.

Contest Details

  • Eligibility: Open to all students grades 6-12 in Austin and surrounding areas. Submissions are welcome in any language. Students may work individually or in teams.
Objective: Create a 30-second PSA promoting safe behavior during a flash flood.
  • Prizes: The top 10 winners will receive a $100 gift card, and their videos will premiere during a community event in April.
  • Deadline: Submissions are due by March 31, 2025.

“By engaging students in flood safety, we’re equipping the next generation with tools to protect themselves and their communities,” said Jorge Morales, Director of the Watershed Protection Department. “This contest encourages creativity while spreading a critical message that can save lives.”

Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity, and overall impact. The winners will be revealed at the start of Austin’s Flood Safety Awareness Week, April 21-26, 2025.
