Deceased:  Michael Rosario, Black male, 2/4/92
 
On Friday, September, 27, 2024, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Austin 911 received several calls reporting a shooting at the HEB located at 500 Canyon Ridge Drive. It was initially reported to be an active shooter, and was later determined not to be. An additional caller stated that a subject was shoplifting and lunged at a security guard with a knife. The caller stated the security guard attempted to tase the subject, then shot him. 
 
Officers responded to the scene and life-saving measures were performed. The subject was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Austin, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 6:20 p.m.
 
The shooter was identified as Warren Owusu. The victim was identified as Michael Rosario Jr.
 
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interviewed witnesses. The investigation showed Mr. Owusu, a uniformed security officer, was attempting to have Rosario exit the store. Rosario displayed a knife and additionally armed himself with a hubcap, that he utilized as a shield. Mr. Owusu attempted to utilize a less lethal taser on Rosario, which was ineffective. Rosario then charged at Mr. Owusu while still displaying the knife. Mr. Owusu discharged his firearm shooting Rosario. This is an ongoing investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
